The group played four historic concerts at the Fillmore East in New York City \u2013 two on New Year\u2019s Eve 1969, and two on New Year\u2019s Day 1970. Never before has the first of these sets been available in its entirety. The vast majority of the performances have never seen the light of day in any configuration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9495707043MsoNormal\"><i class=\"yiv9495707043\">\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9495707043MsoNormal\"><i class=\"yiv9495707043\">Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12\/31\/69\u00a0<\/i>was produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer and John McDermott, the same team who have overseen all of Jimi Hendrix\u2019s audio and audio visual releases by Experience Hendrix L.L.C. since 1995. Additionally, Experience Hendrix is also releasing People, Hell &amp; Angels on the same day.\u00a0<i class=\"yiv9495707043\">People, Hell &amp; Angels<\/i>, a collection of previously unreleased studio recordings, peaked at #2 on Billboard\u2019s Top 200 Album chart in March 2013. The album features studio versions of many of the songs featured on\u00a0<i class=\"yiv9495707043\">Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12\/31\/69.<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv9495707043\">\u00a0Over the course of four extraordinary years, Jimi Hendrix placed his indelible stamp upon popular music with breathtaking velocity. Measured alongside his triumphs at Monterey Pop and Woodstock, Hendrix\u2019s legendary Fillmore East concerts illustrated a critical turning point in a radiant career which boasted of indefinite possibilities.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv9495707043\">\u00a0The revolutionary impact Jimi Hendrix, Billy Cox, and Buddy Miles had upon the boundaries and definitions of rock, R&amp;B, and funk can be traced to four concerts over the course of two evenings on New Year\u2019s Eve and New Year\u2019s Day.\u00a0These performances were first celebrated by\u00a0<i class=\"yiv9495707043\">Band Of Gypsys,\u00a0<\/i>which featured six songs from the two January 1, 1970 concerts including \u201cMachine Gun,\u201d the album\u2019s dramatic centerpiece. Issued in April 1970,\u00a0<i class=\"yiv9495707043\">Band Of Gypsys<\/i>\u00a0challenged and surprised the guitarist\u2019s wide following with its extended arrangements and vibrant mix of rock and soul.\u00a0Nonetheless, the album proved to be a runaway commercial success and sadly, with his death in London in September 1970, would become the last album Jimi Hendrix personally authorized for release.<\/div>\n<p class=\"yiv9495707043MsoNormal\"><i class=\"yiv9495707043\">Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12\/31\/69<\/i>\u00a0documents the first of the group\u2019s four legendary Fillmore East concerts. This set presents an assortment of fresh, exciting new songs such as \u201cEarth Blues,\u201d \u201cEzy Ryder,\u201d \u201cStepping Stone,\u201d \u201cBurning Desire,\u201d and \u201cMachine Gun\u201d\u2014none of which had ever before been issued on disc.\u00a0Moreover, nearly all of the group\u2019s material had never been performed before an audience. \u201cWe decided that we couldn\u2019t do any songs that had already been released,\u201d explains Billy Cox.\u00a0\u201cWe wanted to give them something different.\u00a0So we went at the project in a joyous, creative posture and ultimately developed the repertoire of the Band of Gypsys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9495707043MsoNormal\">\u00a0While promoter Bill Graham had advertised the concerts as \u2018Jimi Hendrix: A Band Of Gypsys\u2019, few could have anticipated what Hendrix had in store.\u00a0\u201cWe had two shows New Years Eve and two shows New Years Day,\u201d remembered Cox.\u00a0\u201cWe didn\u2019t know what to expect from the audience and the audience didn\u2019t know what to expect from us, but from the time we hit that first note, they were in awe.\u00a0You had Jimi Hendrix, a drummer who had been with the Electric Flag and Wilson Pickett, and I was the new kid on the block.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9495707043MsoNormal\">\u00a0With the anticipation of the sold out Fillmore audience heightened to fever pitch, Hendrix led his trio through a scintillating, seventy-five minute opening performance.\u00a0None of the eleven songs presented had yet to grace an Experience album.\u00a0In the place of signature songs like \u201cPurple Haze\u201d and \u201cAll Along The Watchtower\u201d were confident renditions of \u201cPower Of Soul\u201d and \u201cHear My Train A Comin.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9495707043MsoNormal\">\u00a0Jimi generously extended center stage to Buddy Miles, providing a showcase for \u201cChanges\u201d and a charged rendition of the Howard Tate R&amp;B hit \u201cStop\u201d.\u00a0\u201cWe had rehearsed \u201cChanges\u201d and a few others for Buddy,\u201d explains Cox.\u00a0\u201cAll of the songs we performed had been rehearsed.\u00a0We didn\u2019t look at it as Buddy\u2019s part of the show.\u00a0We were all there to give.\u00a0We were all there to help and material went on whether it was written by Jimi or not.\u201d Former Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke, who authored this collection\u2019s liner notes, describes \u201cStop\u201d as being something akin to \u201ca psychedelic power-trio Temptations.\u201d Hendrix\u2019s scalding version of Elmore James\u2019 \u201cBleeding Heart\u201d is the set\u2019s only other cover, underscoring the new band\u2019s emphasis on the blues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9495707043MsoNormal\">\u00a0As the Fillmore audience roared with approval, the Band Of Gypsys left the stage confident that they had validated Jimi\u2019s new music before his loyal followers.\u00a0\u201cAfter the gigs were finished, Jimi was quite relieved,\u201d remembers Cox. \u201cWe felt the concerts went well.\u00a0I might add that in previous gigs with the Experience he had used a fuzz face [tone control pedal] and a Wah-Wah pedal, then at Woodstock he used a fuzz face, Wah-Wah pedal and Uni-Vibe, but at the Fillmore East he used a fuzz face, Wah-Wah pedal, Uni-Vibe and Octavia and it was incredible. In fact you could hear all of it kicking in on \u2018Machine Gun.\u2019\u00a0It was incredible.\u00a0There were people in the audience with their mouths open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9495707043MsoNormal\">\u00a0\u201cMachine Gun\u201d stands as one of Hendrix\u2019s finest and most influential compositions.
