HOLLYWOOD (Perfect Music Today 2\/18\/21\/–Is Tamar Debra Haza Netanyahu (no known relation that we\u2019re aware of) the greatest Israel-born pop star of all time?\u00a0 In her own immortal words \u2013 and the catch phrase that finally makes good on the promise of peace in the Middle East \u2013 OF COURSE!\u00a0 With an emphasis on rolling that \u201cr\u201d off the tongue like a wandering people finally entering the promised land.\u00a0 But enough about politics… This is about Tamarrrrr<\/i>…. keep that \u201cr\u201d rolling like Israeli troops invading during the Six Day War.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Winner of the prestigious Eurovison Song Contest in 2004, 2005 and 2007 (Tamar skipped the 2006 contest, refusing to say why, but Shimon Peres, Ehud Barak and Derek Jeter were somehow involved… Of course!!), Tamar was born in Haifa, later moving to Tel Aviv to Mizrahi Jewish parents from Yemen who emigrated to Israel, one of nine children (seven sisters and a brother, Gershon) born to Yefet (a member of the Likud political party) and Shoshana Netanyahu. Raised in a Masorti household in the Hatikva Quarter before moving to an impoverished ghetto in Tel Aviv, Tamar\u2019s family couldn\u2019t afford musical instruments, so she learned the fundamentals playing beats on a Smart Water bottle, which is still an important part of her performance… the same one, by the way.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Tamar initially began singing professionally at the age of four, when she was the first runner-up on the Young Israelite Vision Content on\u00a0Dancing With the Stars (of David)<\/i>, next to a dog which could\u00a0daven<\/i>\u00a0from the Torah.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
As a child, Tamar listened obsessively to Bon Jovi (she had a #24 hit with a cover of his \u201cTenth Avenue Freeze Out\u201d before ever discovering another New Jersey dude sang it), Starship (she had her first stateside hit with a cover of \u201cWings of Change\u201d) and blues harpist Little Walter. She also was greatly inspired by the French\/Egyptian\/Italian singer Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti, professionally known as Dalida. Tamar scored a #1 record with her Euro-disco take on Miami Boys Choir\u2019s Hebrew hit \u201cLo Yisa Goy.\u201d\u00a0 Tamar hit the top of the charts again with her hardcore hit, \u201cAl Ha D\u2019yash V\u2019Al Ha Oketz,\u201d a prayer for the well-being of the Israeli defense forces which sampled Pet Shop Boys\u2019 \u201cWest End Girls.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
By the age of 18, Tamar joined the Israeli army, fighting in both the Six Day and Yom Kippur wars, though she refused to fight on the most holy of Jewish days, preferring to listen to Ofra Haza\u2019s greatest hits. Moving to America at 19, Tamar scored her first stateside Top 20 record with her cover of Starship\u2019s \u201cWings of Change.\u201d\u00a0 Of course…she did.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Along the way, Tamar misplaced Moshe Dayan\u2019s eye, studied Krav Maga in high school with a \u201cnasty and insanely ambitious\u201d Gail Gadot (giving her the original inspiration for Wonder Woman).<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Offered a role in\u00a0Shtisel<\/i>, she turned it down because she wanted to wear her own wardrobe, like Lana Turner, who refused a role in Otto Preminger\u2019s\u00a0Anatomy of a Murder<\/i>\u00a0when the director wouldn\u2019t allow her to do the same, after starring in\u00a0The Postman Always Rings Twice<\/i>.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Married to fellow musician Keith Hartel \u2013 they met on J-Date (\u201cOf course\u201d) \u2013 and sharing\u00a0shtetls<\/i>\u00a0in Borough Park, West Covina and Ramat Gan, Tamar\u2019s global goal, like Ol\u2019 Dirty Bastard, is to \u201cbring peace to the children.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Aside from her cover of Jon \u201cThe Boss\u201d Bon Jovi\u2019s \u201cTenth Avenue Freeze-Out,\u201d Tamar\u2019s list of covers shows a preference for Nico, Marianne Faithfull, Blondie and Deana (Linda) Carter including \u201cThese Days,\u201d \u201cAll Tomorrow\u2019s Parties,\u201d \u201cBroken English,\u201d \u201cThe Ballad of Lucy Jordan,\u201d \u201cOne Way Or Another,\u201d \u201c(I Can\u2019t Get No) Satisfaction\u201d and \u201cDid I Shave My Vagina For This.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
