Michael Hepworth<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n HOLLYWOOD(Perfect Music Today) 12\/8\/20\/– ( On January 15, 2021,\u00a0ABKCO Records will release\u00a0One Night In Miami\u2026 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)<\/em>,\u00a0the album that accompanies the much-anticipated film directed by Oscar\u00ae\u00a0winner Regina King.\u00a0One Night In Miami\u2026<\/em>\u00a0was written for the screen by\u00a0Kemp Powers, based on his Olivier-nominated 2013 stage play, the film is produced by Jess\u00a0Wu\u00a0Calder and Keith Calder of Snoot Entertainment and Jody Klein\u00a0of ABKCO Films with King and Powers serving as executive producers.\u00a0The film will be distributed globally by Amazon Studios.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Set on the\u00a0night\u00a0of February 25, 1964, the story of\u00a0One Night In Miami\u2026<\/em>\u00a0follows a young Cassius Clay (shortly before he became Muhammad Ali) as he emerges from the\u00a0Miami Beach Convention Center as the new World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Against all odds, he defeated Sonny Liston and shocked the sports world. While crowds of people swarm\u00a0Miami Beach to celebrate the match, Clay – unable to stay on there because of Jim Crow-era segregation laws –\u00a0instead spends the\u00a0night\u00a0at the Hampton House Motel\u00a0in one\u00a0of\u00a0Miami’s historically black neighborhoods. It was there that he celebrated his win with three of his closest friends: activist Malcolm X, singer Sam\u00a0Cooke\u00a0and football star Jim Brown. The next morning, the four men emerge determined to define a new world for themselves and their people. The ensemble cast consist of\u00a0Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X, Eli Goree as Cassius Clay, Aldis Hodge as Jim Brown and Leslie Odom Jr. as Sam Cooke.<\/p>\n Leslie Odom Jr. performs Sam Cooke\u2019s most celebrated repertoire in the film and on the soundtrack album including \u201cYou Send Me,\u201d \u201cChain Gang,\u201d \u201cGood Times\u201d and \u201cA Change Is Gonna Come.\u201d Apart from his performance of the Sam Cooke material,\u00a0the soundtrack includes \u201cSpeak Now,\u201d a powerful original song co-written and performed by Odom who has long admired Sam Cooke. \u201cPlaying Sam Cooke was some big shoes to fill. It was a challenge and an honor. I have such respect and admiration and awe for his talent and what he was able to achieve,\u201d he says.\u00a0Odom rose to prominence for originating the role of Aaron Burr in the Broadway musical\u00a0Hamilton<\/em>\u00a0for which he took home the Best Actor Tony\u00ae and Grammy\u00ae Awards. He recently released\u00a0The Christmas album<\/em>, his second holiday album, which follows the release of\u00a0Mr<\/em>, his third album and first of all-original material. Odom can also be heard voicing the character of Owen Tillerman in the Apple TV+ animated musical comedy series\u00a0Central Park<\/em>, a role which earned him an Emmy nomination.<\/p>\n Music from the film\u2019s original score composed by prolific Academy Award\u00ae nominee and six-time Grammy\u00ae winner Terence Blanchard is featured on the album. The celebrated trumpeter and\u00a0composer\u2019s recent film credits include\u00a0Da 5 Bloods<\/em>,\u00a0BlacKkKlansman<\/em>,\u00a0Harrie<\/em>t, and HBO\u2019s\u00a0Perry Mason<\/em>\u00a0drama series.<\/p>\n Throughout his career, Blanchard has consistently attached himself to artistic works of conscience in regard to which he confesses,\u00a0\u201cYou get to a certain age when you ask, \u2018Who\u2019s going to stand up and speak out for us?\u2019 Then you look around and realize that the James Baldwins, Muhammad Alis and Dr. Kings are no longer here… and begin to understand that it falls on you. I\u2019m not trying to say I\u2019m here to try to correct the whole thing, I\u2019m just trying to speak the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI originally had an approach of scoring this film with a larger ensemble that could possibly date back to that period,\u201d says Blanchard. \u201cBut Regina had this great idea of just using piano. It took me a while to come around to the idea but now I think the piano itself effectively creates a historical narration for the film.\u201d<\/p>\n Blanchard says, \u201cGiven the nature of the score, being a jazz piano score, I gave Benny Green – a great jazz pianist – room to improvise and manipulate the melodic content for that theme.\u201d In addition to the piano, one emotional film moment gave Blanchard a chance to use another instrument. \u201cThe prayer scene with Malcolm X, allowed me to introduce the duduk (a middle eastern wind instrument) which is also used in key spots in the film,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n Cast member and Grammy\u00ae, Emmy and two-time Tony nominee\u00a0Jeremy Pope portrays R&B great Jackie Wilson in the film, his version of the latter\u2019s \u201cLonely Teardrops\u201d appears on the soundtrack.\u00a0Included on the soundtrack album, is a 1964 recording of \u201cPut Me Down Easy\u201d by L.C. Cooke (Sam\u2019s younger brother) written by Sam Cooke for L.C. and features his accompanying vocal as well. SAR Records released \u201cPut Me Down Easy\u201d as well as the organ burner \u201cGreazee\u201d by Billy Preston which also appears on the soundtrack.
