If there&#8217;s a silver lining, it&#8217;s how musicians have responded to the pandemic\u00a0through songs of pain, frustration, anger and hope.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Spotify data analyst Glenn McDonald maintains a playlist, The Sound of the Virus, that tracks tunes about the pandemic. The tally, updated daily and ranked by popularity, exceeds 8,300 songs and is currently topped by \u201cStuck With U\u201d by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber. Every genre, mood and point of view crops up in COVID songs. You&#8217;ll find hope and inspiration in \u00a0\u201cSing for Live,\u201d\u00a0a passionate ballad from U2&#8217;s Bono and Jennifer Hudson, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwill.i.am&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNHHe1XnydSZEbP1Z5jctRzHGSA02Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwill.i.am%26sa%3DD%26sntz%3D1%26usg%3DAFQjCNHHe1XnydSZEbP1Z5jctRzHGSA02Q&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1602936692786000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEWjois8jqeHBt6a6deozC11mUiYQ\">will.i.am<\/a> and Yoshiki. Queen + Adam Lambert retooled the uplifting \u201cYou Are The Champions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others express the claustrophobia of isolation.\u00a0Country singer Luke Combs pines for hugs, handshakes and ballgames in \u201cSix Feet Apart.\u201d \u00a0In his rocking \u201cLockdown,\u201d \u00a0Mike Campbell sings about being alone, avoiding bad news and \u201cmicrowaving everything I eat.\u201d Detroit rapper Gmac Cash, whose handful of COVID tunes includes a tribute to Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, admits in \u201cAt Home\u201d that he&#8217;d rather be at school, at work or waiting 40 minutes for food at a restaurant than at home, where \u201cI tried to cook and made me a burned steak.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Anger bubbles over in Riley Green&#8217;s country tune \u201cBetter Than Me.\u201d \u00a0which opens with, \u201cIs the world on fire? Feels like a bad dream\/Did the hammer come down? Feels like a kick in the teeth.\u201d And sorrow flows from Adam Hambrick&#8217;s \u201cBetween Me and the End of the World,\u201d based on his wife&#8217;s work as a physician&#8217;s assistant administering COVID-19 tests.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Plenty of musicians are wringing humor from adversity. Randy Newman&#8217;s signature wit threads through \u201cStay Away,\u201d a song about social distancing. Americana husband-and-wife duo Buddy and Julie Miller delivered a public service song, \u201cConcerning Bleach.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0that&#8217;s both stinging and hilarious. And even the annoying B jumped into the pool with the novelty ditty \u201cWash Your Hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Some artists are taking on activist roles. Gloria Estefan\u00a0reworked her spirited 1989 hit \u201cGet on Your Feet\u201d to make \u201cPut Your Mask On!&#8221;\u00a0Bon Jovi\u2019s \u201cDo What You Can&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vh6ctK7ONo0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/youtu.be\/vh6ctK7ONo0&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1602936692786000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEL4ZLC06nStwSI_9BHQ-P3RxLOlg\">\u201c<\/a>encourages volunteerism. Clark, John Mellencamp&#8217;s drummer since 1996 and a singer-guitarist with six solo albums to his credit, says the impetus for the album was simple: \u201cIt gave me something to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At home in Anderson, Indiana, Clark was on a morning stroll in early March surveying the quiet streets and wondering how his community was coping. \u201cI thought,\u00a0<i>Why don&#8217;t I write something about what&#8217;s going here?<\/i>\u201d Clark, 60, says. \u201cArtists have to write about real life. What&#8217;s more real than this?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was the first,\u201d he says. \u201cBoy, songs just started pouring out of me. I&#8217;ve got a neighbor who&#8217;s recently widowed, and I was thinking about how he couldn&#8217;t see anyone and how hard that must be. So the next song I wrote was \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VNlZMm1ztx0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/youtu.be\/VNlZMm1ztx0&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1602936692786000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHDe3eNHevSJTb38KQgtpsAJb-rNw\">Ain&#8217;t Gettin\u2019 Out of Bed Today.&#8217;<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Others quickly followed. Clark enlisted his 23-year-old daughter, Abigail, to sing on several tracks, and also approached Lovin\u2019 Spoonful founder and harmonica player John Sebastian, 76. He&#8217;s featured on five of\u00a0<i>Songs From Isolation<\/i>&#8216;s 13 tracks, including the sole cover, Jimmy Cliff&#8217;s apt\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yPalN3bNCLY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/youtu.be\/yPalN3bNCLY&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1602936692786000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHPU1VkX7DErCd5xBczdHTbUdcLpQ\">\u201cSitting in Limbo.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clark&#8217;s Indiana bandmates, dubbed the Backroom Boys, contributed recorded parts from remote work spaces. \u201cI picked the best players around,\u201d Clark says. \u201cThey had to have a home studio. It was easy because nobody was going anywhere. I&#8217;ve been Dane Clark,in Mellencamp&#8217;s band for 25 years. We were supposed to tour in January. That&#8217;s not going to happen. All the sound guys, drivers, crew are out of work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Clark believes music&#8217;s power to heal and enlighten has helped many cope with the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I found my voice finally.
