On August 20, in advance of the album\u2019s digital and CD worldwide October 23 release date, he\u2019s putting out \u201cColdwater,\u201d a newly recorded track that is a collaboration with friend and fellow Mississippian Cedric Burnside.<\/p>\n<p>Every song on\u00a0<em>My Mississippi Reunion\u00a0<\/em>relates to a locale or aspect of the state.\u00a0 More than a few take their titles from towns including \u201cMidnight,\u201d \u201cRosedale,\u201d \u201cFlatlands,\u201d \u201cRena Lara,\u201d \u201cGreenville,\u201d and \u201cIndianola.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cSweet Delta Chains\u201d makes titular reference to the state\u2019s legendary delta region; \u201cOne Mississippi\u201d and \u201cMississippi Minute\u201d take their titles from turns of phrase while \u201cHighway 61\u201d cites the state\u2019s most celebrated thoroughfare. \u00a0He wrote \u201cOne Mississippi\u201d at the request of Governor Phil Bryant in 2017 as the state\u2019s official bicentennial song.\u00a0 The state also recognized him with the installation of a Mississippi Country Trail Marker in Greenville at the same time as Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Jimmie Rodgers were similarly honored.<\/p>\n<p>Steve grew up in Greenville and serves as his state\u2019s Music and Cultural Ambassador. He thought his compilation was complete when he happened to be driving to Memphis a few months ago.\u00a0\u00a0 He departed the main road, that selfsame Highway 61, and found himself on a back route.\u00a0 Pondering \u201cthe impact the COVID pandemic has had on so many of our friends and businesses,\u201d \u00a0he came upon a road sign for the town of Coldwater which he had seen many times in this past. \u00a0This time something clicked, Steve remembers, \u201cI thought, we\u2019re in it.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s of a mind that \u201ca song writes itself\u201d so the title begat a lyric and tune and the song soon took shape.<\/p>\n<p>He decided to recruit Cedric Burnside to join him on the track, offering, \u201cI admire Cedric for everything he represents, not just because he\u2019s a world class musician.\u00a0 He\u2019s a sterling human being and I\u2019ve respected him for years.\u201d\u00a0 Steve organizes and promotes the Mighty Mississippi Festival, a yearly celebration of roots music and noted, \u201cThere\u2019s no Mighty Mississippi Festival without Cedric\u201d who has been a mainstay of the event.\u00a0 \u201cI recall one year when it poured \u2013 seven inches of rain \u2013 but Cedric stayed out there on stage and so did I.\u00a0 We were the only ones, along with Deana Carter who joined me. \u00a0That was a powerful moment and he was a true inspiration.\u201d\u00a0 This year\u2019s festival, slated for the weekend of October 1, is moving from Greenville to Clarksdale where it will take place on land where Muddy Waters lived before he moved to Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Cedric is the\u00a0scion of a family that has been tremendously influential in the blues field. His grandfather was the legendary R.L. Burnside who shed light on North Mississippi\u2019s idiosyncratic hill country blues style. His father was the noted drummer\u00a0Calvin Jackson.\u00a0Cedric is the recipient of four Blues Foundation Awards and has had two Grammy nominations.\u00a0\u00a0 He says of \u201cColdwater,\u201d \u201cWe got in the studio and we knocked it out! \u00a0We had a lot of fun recording it and I\u2019m really glad Steve wanted me to be a part of this. I hope people enjoy what we made!\u201d\u00a0 For his part, Steve says, \u201cYou\u2019ve got\u00a0two Mississippians coming together during these times in song. Love &amp; Special Sauce, Band of Heathens, Ryan Bingham, the Revivalists, Merlin Morris, Ashley McBride, Government Mule, Kingfish, Jarekus Singleton, Mr. Sipp as well as Cedric Burnside and others.\u00a0 Two years ago, he released\u00a0<em>Down At The Liquor Store<\/em>, an album that was recorded at the legendary Club Ebony in Indianola, hometown of B.B. King. For the project he was backed by The Kings\u2019 Men, a band of veteran Mississippi musicians, the majority of whom had worked for B.B. King with some also doing double duty behind Elvis Presley.<\/p>\n<p>While still Nashville-based, Steve released \u00a0<em>Waitin\u2019 On Joe<\/em>, his breakthrough album. The album\u2019s hit title song went to #1 on CMT and was the focus of an evocative video that featured the participation of fellow Mississippian and Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman. \u00a0That landmark album also included \u201cI Don\u2019t Have To Be Me (\u2018Til Monday)\u201d the recipient of a three Million-Air Award from BMI and ranked in the Top 5 of most-played songs of the decade. Taylor Swift told People Magazine in 2010 that her favorite song of that year was Steve Azar\u2019s \u201cSunshine.\u201d In the interim, the song has become a popular wedding anthem.
