HOLLYWOOD(Perfect Music Today)8\/2\/20\/–Amazon Studios has acquired worldwide rights to Oscar-winning actress\u00a0Regina\u00a0King\u2019s feature directorial debut,\u00a0One\u00a0Night\u00a0in\u00a0Miami<\/em>, written by Olivier-nominated Kemp Powers, based off his 2013 stage play. Producers are Jess\u00a0Wu\u00a0Calder and Keith Calder of Snoot Entertainment (Blindspotting, Anomalisa<\/em>) and Jody Klein\u00a0of ABKCO (The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus<\/em>), King and Powers are executive producers.<\/p>\n

Set on the\u00a0night\u00a0of February 25, 1964, the story follows a young Cassius Clay (before he became Muhammad Ali) as he emerges from the\u00a0Miami Beach Convention Center the new World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Against all odds, he defeated Sonny Liston and shocked the sports world. While crowds of people swarm\u00a0Miami Beach to celebrate the match, Clay – unable to stay on the island because of Jim Crow-era segregation laws –\u00a0instead spends the\u00a0night\u00a0at the Hampton House Motel\u00a0in one\u00a0of\u00a0Miami’s historically black neighborhoods celebrating with three of his closest friends: activist Malcolm X, singer\u00a0Sam\u00a0Cooke\u00a0and football star Jim Brown. The next morning, the four men emerge determined to define a new world for themselves and their people.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0One\u00a0Night\u00a0in\u00a0Miami<\/em>, Powers explores what happened during these pivotal hours through the dynamic relationship between the four men and the way their friendship, paired with their shared struggles, fueled their path to becoming the civil rights icons they are today.<\/p>\n

King said, \u201cAmazon’s enthusiasm for\u00a0One Night in Miami<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0both humbling and exciting.\u00a0 I am honored to have them as partners on my feature\u00a0film directorial debut.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amazon Studios is planning to release\u00a0One Night in Miami<\/em>\u00a0later in the year with an eye towards the awards corridor. ABKCO will release the official\u00a0One Night in Miami<\/em>\u00a0original soundtrack album in conjunction with the film.<\/p>\n

ICM Partners represents Regina King and negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers. King is also represented by attorney Nina Shaw and managed by John Carrabino.<\/p>\n
