With several songs featured on such shows as\u00a0The O.C.<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0How I Met Your Mother<\/em>\u00a0and with three albums already under their belts \u2013\u00a0Freedom Wind<\/em>\u00a0(2008),\u00a0Grand Hotel<\/em>\u00a0(2012) and 2016\u2019s\u00a0Together<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 this June\u2019s twin releases are Brewer\u2019s most ambitious undertaking to date. The impetus for this stems from the overwhelmingly positive reaction the band received after releasing several cover songs as free downloads leading up to their sophomore release.<\/p>\n \u201cI still get asked about those songs, so there is obviously a demand for a covers album,\u201d Jason Brewer states. \u201cI had a brand new album just about finished, which I think is one of the strongest things I\u2019ve ever done. I figured I\u2019ve got access to all this studio time and I\u2019ve got some players to pull in to do it, so I\u2019ll do an album of \u201860s covers, too. I just got to work and I finished both albums at the same time. It was an opportunity to give back to our hardcore followers who have loved the band for over ten years now.\u201d<\/p>\n The self-titled album of originals is an artistic triumph that includes standout tracks \u201cLove So Fine,\u201d the Phil Spector-inspired \u201cLook To the Horizon\u201d and \u201cDawn\u201d \u2013 The Explorers Club\u2019s first exploration into bossa nova. \u201cI had a solid lineup of musicians working with me on the previous albums and I catered to their tastes, but this time around I\u00a0<\/em>made the record\u00a0<\/em>that I\u00a0<\/em>wanted to make,\u201d Brewer proclaims.<\/p>\n To Sing And Be Born Again<\/em>\u00a0is a potpourri of songs from 1965-68, that presents a mix of top 10 hits (\u201cI Wonder What She\u2019s Doing Tonight\u201d by Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart, \u201cShe\u2019d Rather Be With Me\u201d by The Turtles, \u201cKicks\u201d by Paul Revere & The Raiders, \u201cThis Guy\u2019s In Love With You” by Herb Alpert, \u201cQuinn The Eskimo\u201d by Bob Dylan via Manfred Mann) and obscurities. These include \u201cMaybe After He\u2019s Gone\u201d by The Zombies and \u201cRoses And Rainbows\u201d by a pre-Three Dog Night Danny Hutton. \u201cCan\u2019t Find The Time,\u201d originally by the \u201cBosstown Sound\u201d band Orpheus as well as a later chart entry by Rose Colored Glass, features former Barenaked Ladies member Steven Page on vocals; the Lovin\u2019 Spoonful\u2019s \u201cDidn\u2019t Have To Do It\u201d features Jay Gonzalez of Drive-By Truckers.<\/p>\n How did \u201880s baby Jason Brewer wind up covering songs like \u201cThe Sun Ain\u2019t Gonna Shine (Anymore)\u201d by Frankie Valli\/The Walker Brothers that came out over a decade before his birth? \u201cWhen I was a kid my neighbor had a bunch of cars from the \u201850s in his garage and he was always blasting Elvis, Chuck Berry, The Beatles and The Beach Boys. I liked that music better than the music that was current at the time. I listened to an oldies radio station in my hometown and studied the craft of songwriting. I\u2019ve been a lifelong retrophile.\u201d<\/p>\n Grammy nominated producer Matt Goldman (Copeland, Underoath, Smalltown Poets), who had engineered the first two albums by The Explorers Club, was brought back into the fold to oversee production on both current projects. The majority of the album of originals was recorded live in the legendary Studio A in Nashville, where Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and The Byrds recorded some of their most iconic records. Brewer was taken aback by the living history of which he was taking part. \u201cIt was really great to record organ overdubs with an old ribbon mic that Elvis Presley sang into.
