HOLLYWOOD (Perfect Music Today) 6\/1\/20\/–ABKCO Records has announced a new three-part series curated from the Cameo Parkway archives with the June 19th release of three dance-oriented compilations that underscore the legacy of Philadelphia\u2019s legendary label.\u00a0 The announcement comes on the anniversary of Chubby Checker\u2019s \u201cLet\u2019s Twist Again\u201d having been awarded the 1961 GRAMMY\u00ae for Best Rock & Roll Recording.\u00a0Dancin\u2019 Party: The Chubby Checker Collection 1960 \u2013 1966<\/em>\u00a0is a definitive set of tunes from his career defining period. The second set, titled\u00a0You Can\u2019t Sit Down: Cameo Parkway Dance Crazes 1958 \u2013 1964<\/em>\u00a0is a collection of the label\u2019s most notable dance releases of the period. The third set,\u00a0You Got The Power: Cameo Parkway Northern Soul 1964 \u2013 1967<\/em>, consists of tracks famously embraced by the UK\u2019s iconic Northern Soul movement.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia-based Cameo Records was founded\u00a0in late 1956\u00a0by Bernie Lowe and\u00a0Kal\u00a0Mann,\u00a0budding songwriters who would later find success with Elvis Presley’s recording of their composition \u201c(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear.\u201d\u00a0Another Lowe & Mann composition would soon become\u00a0Cameo\u2019s first hit\u00a0when\u00a0\u201cButterfly,\u201d a rockabilly-tinged smash for South Philadelphia native Charlie Gracie\u00a0hit #1\u00a0on the pop charts. In 1958 the Parkway label was added and by 1959 both labels\u00a0began to\u00a0emerge as industry powerhouses with hits from Bobby Rydell and Chubby Checker,\u00a0whose version of \u201cThe Twist\u201d catalyzed a social upheaval,\u00a0not to mention massive record sales.<\/p>\n

Concurrent with the success of \u201cThe Twist,\u201d Cameo Parkway became one of the industry\u2019s most successful independent companies, on par with Motown\u2019s rise later that decade. By late 1961, Cameo Parkway Records performance was so consistently strong that ownership took the company public; it became the first independent record label to offer shares on the American Stock Exchange. In all, during its roughly 11-year existence, the company placed more than one hundred singles and several dozen albums onto the Billboard charts.<\/p>\n

Though somewhat removed from the pop industry centers of New York and Hollywood, Cameo Parkway\u2019s locale proved to a be a boon to exposure insofar as Philadelphia was the home of\u00a0American Bandstand<\/em>. The hugely popular weekday afternoon teen dance program, initially hosted by local DJ Bob Horn and ultimately by Dick Clark, proved to be a powerful launching pad for many artists affiliated with Cameo and Parkway. With Clark at the helm from 1956 onward, the show went national and\u00a0Bandstand<\/em>, Dick Clark and numerous Cameo Parkway artists became household names throughout the country. Charlie Gracie recalls, \u201cGoing on\u00a0Bandstand<\/em>\u00a0was like hitting a home run with the bases loaded.\u201d Notes legendary Philadelphia DJ Jerry \u201cThe Geator\u201d Blavat, \u201cThe importance of Cameo Parkway was the importance of\u00a0Bandstand<\/em>. It was the label that created all the dances.\u00a0You look at Cameo Parkway\u2019s success and look at\u00a0Bandstand<\/em>\u00a0and there it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chubby Checker, proved to be the single most successful component of the Cameo Parkway artist roster. Beyond \u201cThe Twist\u201d and \u201cLet\u2019s Twist Again,\u201d he scored numerous successes, most of which were keyed to dance moves and good times. He recorded numerous dance floor fillers and secured impressive chart successes. Twenty-one of Checker\u2019s recordings are featured in the forthcoming\u00a0Dancin\u2019 Party: The Chubby Checker Collection: 1960\u00a0\u2013 1966.<\/em>\u00a0 This definitive collection highlights seventeen Top 40 hits of which twelve entered the Top 20; seven charted in the Top 10 with two ultimately reaching the #1 spot.<\/p>\n
