HOLLYWOOD (Perfect Music Today) 1\/23\/20—ABKCO Music & Records launches a year-long celebration leading up to the 90th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of Sam Cooke\u2019s birth with the January 24 release of\u00a0The Complete Keen Years (1957 \u2013 1960)\u00a0CD Box Set\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong>and announces today, a series of eight vinyl editions, including several Tracey Limited titles\u00a0back in print on vinyl restored with original artwork. The release date was chosen because it is the closest Friday to Cooke\u2019s actual January 22 birthdate.<\/p>\n

Following the expiration of his RCA Victor contract in 1963, Sam Cooke established Tracey Limited, his own label, which assigned distribution rights to RCA for a finite period of time. Tracey was Cooke\u2019s way to assert both artistic commercial control over his own recordings and\u00a0to better realize his far-reaching musical ambitions.\u00a0He was one of the first recording stars, black or white, to command this kind of control, the most noteworthy other example at the time being Frank Sinatra. The first album released through Tracey were\u00a0Sam Cooke At The Copa<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Ain\u2019t That Good News<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

On April 3rd<\/sup>,\u00a0Sam Cooke At the Copa<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Ain\u2019t That Good News<\/em>\u00a0will be back in print on vinyl, and also available for the first time on vinyl,\u00a0Keep Movin\u2019 On<\/em><\/strong>, the critically acclaimed compilation that was first issued on CD nineteen years ago.\u00a0Keep Movin\u2019 On<\/em>, a late career overview released in 2001,\u00a0was titled after a song which, at that time, had never before been released. The album was lauded by\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/em>\u00a0as \u201can indispensable collection\u201d but has never been available on LP until now.\u00a0\u00a0Its 23 tracks are offered on two 180 gm vinyl LPs housed in a gatefold package with the original essay by Peter Guralnick intact.<\/p>\n

Sam Cooke<\/em>\u00a0At The Copa<\/em>, first issued in October of 1964, is the audio document of Cooke\u2019s triumphant stand at New York\u2019s leading nightclub and offers insight into his easy going but totally focused performing style in front of a sophisticated audience.\u00a0\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0review noted of Cooke\u2019s Copacabana performance fifty-five years ago, \u201cIt may surprise that he has dignity, humility and feeling to go with a strong voice. In the years to come, more will be heard of Mr. Cooke.\u00a0\u00a0His is a talent that can grow.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Despite Cooke\u2019s tragic and untimely death before the end of that year, the review\u2019s prophesy has been borne out by the masterful performances heard on\u00a0At The Copa<\/em>\u00a0that include\u00a0\u201cNobody Knows You When You\u2019re Down and Out,\u201d \u201cFrankie and Johnny,\u201d \u201cTry A Little Tenderness,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0and the hits \u201cTwistin\u2019 The Night Away,\u201d \u201cYou Send Me\u201d and \u201c(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Of special note is Cooke\u2019s version of Bob Dylan\u2019s \u201cBlowin\u2019 In The Wind\u201d that reflected the struggle for civil rights that was underway at that time.\u00a0\u00a0Dylan\u2019s song inspired Cooke to write his like-themed masterpiece, \u201cA Change Is Gonna Come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ain\u2019t That Good News<\/em>\u00a0was originally issued earlier in 1964 via Tracey Records. It was to be the star\u2019s final studio album released during his lifetime and, as such, finds Cooke at the apogee of his pop-soul career with the title track going to #1 on the Cash Box R&B chart. The album\u2019s folk tinged \u201cMeet Me At Mary\u2019s Place\u201d was the inspiration for \u201cMary\u2019s Place,\u201d the Bruce Springsteen song heard on his 2002 album\u00a0The Rising<\/em>. Also featured is \u201cGood Times,\u201d which the Rolling Stones were inspired to record and include on the band\u2019s\u00a0Out of Our Heads<\/em>\u00a0album as a tribute to Cooke after his passing while \u201cAnother Saturday Night\u201d went Top 10 on Billboard\u2019s Hot 100.\u00a0\u00a0The album provided the original context for the still resonant \u201cA Change Is Gonna Come\u201d that went on to become a musical beacon during the struggle for civil rights. Upon his election as 44th\u00a0President of the United States, Barack Obama paraphrased the song\u2019s key lyrics before a massive crowd of supporters at Chicago\u2019s Grant Park declaring, \u201cIt’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also planned for 2020 the individual component albums of\u00a0The Complete Keen Years (1957 -1960)\u00a0<\/em>are also being released as vinyl LPs alongside the CD box set.\u00a0 Sourced from newly discovered master tape reels, these albums, pressed on 180 gm vinyl, feature restored original art and the original tune stacks as when first released.\u00a0 They include\u00a0Sam Cooke, Encore<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Tribute to The Lady, Hit Kit<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0The Wonderful World of Sam Cooke<\/em><\/strong>, essential titles in the Sam Cooke vinyl library.<\/p>\n
