HOLLYWOOD(Perfect Music Today) 9\/16\/19\/–The generation of the Carter Family credited with the \u201cbig bang\u201d that started the genre that would come to be known as country music with four successive generations of Carter kin, including \u201cCarter Girls\u201d Helen, June and Anita as well as Carlene Carter and John Carter Cash are heard on\u00a0The Carter Family – Across Generations<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 The album project has been the focus of producer John Carter Cash\u2019s efforts for the past few years and will be released October 18 by Reviver Entertainment Group\u2019s Legacy label on LP, CD and across digital platforms.\u00a0 \u201cFarther On,\u201d a traditional song, also known as \u201cIs Better Farther On,\u201d\u00a0brought to the fore by Sara and Maybelle Carter at the 1963 Newport Folk Festival, has just \u00a0been released by Reviver. It includes vocals\u00a0<\/span><\/a>by Sara Carter, Carlene Carter, Dale Jett (grandson of A.P. and Sara Carter) and Adrianna Cross (great-great-granddaughter of Sara and A.P.\u00a0Carter).<\/span><\/div>\n

Carlene Carter noted, \u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful blessing to be able to have the technology today to have so many people who have passed and to be able to sing with them. As a child, I was told \u2018when we\u2019re all passed away, you have to carry this on and that\u2019s what we\u2019ve done.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 John Carter Cash, her brother adds, \u201cWe were charged with this,\u201d suggesting, \u201cIt\u2019s not just about fame and power, it\u2019s about the music\u201d with his sister chiming in, \u201cAnd the love.\u201d<\/div>\n

Reflecting on his family\u2019s role in music history, John Carter Cash suggests, \u201cYou show me ten songs and I\u2019ll show you nine that have direct influence from The Carter Family.\u00a0 The Carter Family touched many people,\u201d he notes and the album, in a very tangible way, keeps that tradition moving forward.<\/p>\n

After hearing the finished album, Carlene commented, \u201cIt\u2019s very authentic, it\u2019s just who they are and when I hear it, I get very emotional because all I wanted to do was protect that legacy and you truly hear that \u2018Carter thing.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n

Reviver Entertainment Group Founder David Ross noted, \u201cThe Carter Family\u2019s contribution and historical relevance to country music\u00a0cannot be overstated. \u00a0Without them, the genre would simply not have become the touchstone it has been for almost 100 years.”<\/div>\n
The Carter Sisters, also known as the Carter Girls, were the daughters of Sara\u2019s cousin Maybelle who had married Ezra Carter, A.P.\u2019s brother.\u00a0 With their mother, they kept the Carter Family tradition thriving from the 1940s into the 1990s.\u00a0 Anita, June and Helen toured and recorded with Maybelle during those years, ultimately becoming part of The Johnny Cash Show.\u00a0 Cash would marry June in 1968 and had already made the Carter Family an integral part of his in-concert presentation. His inclusion of the Carters enabled many to witness, both in concert and on TV, and to be influenced by \u201cthe Carter Scratch,\u201d\u00a0 Mother Maybelle\u2019s innovative guitar technique.\u00a0 Carlene, June\u2019s daughter by country great Carl Smith, was part of the group as was as Lorrie Carter Bennet, Anita\u2019s daughter, who is also heard on the album. Carlene, of course, went on to country stardom in her own right while John Carter Cash, sole offspring of the marriage from Johnny Cash and June Carter, became a noted Nashville-based producer and recording artist.<\/div>\n

Now, with\u00a0Across Generations<\/i>, things have come full circle with original recordings on which original Carter Family members are heard with contributions from later generations. Members of the fifth generation are heard with their great-great grandparents in a melodic version of time travel. Song selections range from Carter Family standards \u201cWorried Man Blues,\u201d \u201cWill The Circle Be Unbroken\u201d) to \u201cMaybelle\u201d, a composition by Danny and David Carter, written in 1978 upon the passing of their grandmother, to a newly discovered original autoharp recording simply titled \u201cMaybelle\u2019s New Tune.\u201d<\/div>\n

Tape sources included a just discovered home recorded tape that was used to convey news and music to family members in lieu of letters, unreleased tracks by June Carter, as well as long-forgotten and never previously released recordings by Helen and Anita.<\/div>\n

The \u201cfirst family of country music\u201d broke through nationally after the legendary Bristol Sessions in the summer of 1927. It was then that A.P., Sara and her cousin Maybelle travelled across the Tennessee line from the their homestead in Hiltons, VA, nestled at the foot of Clinch Mountain, in the heart of Appalachia. In Bristol, they were recorded by pioneering producer Ralph Peer. Years later, he recalled that first encounter with the three Carters. “He’s dressed in overalls… they looked like hillbillies. But as soon as I heard Sara’s voice, that was it. I knew it was going to be wonderful.\u201d During those initial sessions, the still teenaged Maybelle\u2019s ability of playing melody and rhythm on guitar simultaneously, later known as \u2018the Carter scratch,\u2019 was noted.\u00a0 The records they recorded at that time and afterwards would go on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies for the Victor Talking Machine Company.<\/div>\n

The Carter Family thereafter became a sensation on \u201cborder radio,\u201d broadcasting from XERA, an ultra-high wattage station located in Ciudad Acuna, on the Mexican side of the border across from Del Rio, TX. Its powerful signal, across the entirety of the United States, propelled the Carter Family to legendary status. \u00a0They were the first musical group to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Carter tradition made it to Nashville through the good graces of Maybelle and her daughters, regulars on the Grand Ole Opry.\u00a0 The tradition continued with the births of fourth generation Carter Family members including the children of Carlene Carter, John Carter Cash, Dale Jett, David Carter Jones and Danny Carter Jones.<\/div>\n

Children of June Carter Cash, Carlene and John Carter perform on the album. \u00a0In turn, their offspring make appearances, as well as numerous other descendants of A.P., Sara, Ezra, Maybelle and their progeny.<\/div>\n

The release of\u00a0The Carter Family – Across Generations<\/i>\u00a0literally and figuratively brings The Carter Family legacy full circle and continues to be unbroken over the course of more than 90 years.<\/div>\n

The song \u00a0incorporates the vocal and guitar of Sara Carter (first generation Carter Family, wife of A.P. Carter) and vocals by Adrianna Cross who is Sara and A.P.\u2019s great-great granddaughter (fifth generation) and vocals and autoharp by Dale Jett, A.P. and Sara\u2019s grandson (third generation). The album\u2019s producer, John Carter Cash, plays acoustic guitar on the track and he\u2019s the grandson of Maybelle Carter and son of June Carter and Johnny Cash (third generation) and Carlene Carter is heard on guitar. \u00a0She\u2019s the granddaughter of Maybelle Carter and daughter of June Carter and Carl Smith (third generation). \u00a0The whistling you hear on the track is by Coy Bayes who was Sara Carter\u2019s second husband and a cousin of A.P.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
