Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The <a title=\"Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rock_and_Roll_Hall_of_Fame\">Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/a> describes him as &#8220;arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-R.26RHOFB_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jimi_Hendrix#cite_note-R.26RHOFB-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perfectmusictoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/tourbook030-Thumb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1059\" src=\"http:\/\/perfectmusictoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/tourbook030-Thumb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"511\" height=\"536\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Born in <a title=\"Seattle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seattle\">Seattle<\/a>, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained as a <a title=\"Paratrooper\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paratrooper\">paratrooper<\/a> in the <a title=\"101st Airborne Division\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/101st_Airborne_Division\">101st Airborne Division<\/a>; he was granted an honorable discharge the following year. Soon afterward, he moved to <a title=\"Clarksville, Tennessee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clarksville,_Tennessee\">Clarksville, Tennessee<\/a>, and began playing gigs on the <a title=\"Chitlin' Circuit\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chitlin%27_Circuit\">Chitlin&#8217; Circuit<\/a>, earning a place in <a title=\"The Isley Brothers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Isley_Brothers\">the Isley Brothers<\/a>&#8216; backing band and later with <a title=\"Little Richard\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_Richard\">Little Richard<\/a>, with whom he continued to work through mid-1965. He then played with <a title=\"Curtis Knight\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Knight\">Curtis Knight<\/a> and the Squires before moving to England in late 1966 after being discovered by <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Linda Keith\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linda_Keith\">Linda Keith<\/a>, who in turn interested bassist <a title=\"Chas Chandler\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chas_Chandler\">Chas Chandler<\/a> of <a title=\"The Animals\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Animals\">the Animals<\/a> in becoming his first manager.<sup id=\"cite_ref-hendrix2017_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jimi_Hendrix#cite_note-hendrix2017-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> Within months, Hendrix had earned three UK top ten hits with <a title=\"The Jimi Hendrix Experience\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Jimi_Hendrix_Experience\">the Jimi Hendrix Experience<\/a>: &#8220;<a title=\"Hey Joe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hey_Joe\">Hey Joe<\/a>&#8220;, &#8220;<a title=\"Purple Haze\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Purple_Haze\">Purple Haze<\/a>&#8220;, and &#8220;<a title=\"The Wind Cries Mary\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wind_Cries_Mary\">The Wind Cries Mary<\/a>&#8220;. He achieved fame in the U.S. after his performance at the <a title=\"Monterey Pop Festival\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monterey_Pop_Festival\">Monterey Pop Festival<\/a> in 1967, and in 1968 his third and final studio album, <i><a title=\"Electric Ladyland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_Ladyland\">Electric Ladyland<\/a><\/i>, reached number one in the U.S.; it was Hendrix&#8217;s most commercially successful release and his first and only number one album. The world&#8217;s highest-paid performer, he headlined the <a title=\"Woodstock\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Woodstock\">Woodstock<\/a> Festival in 1969 and the <a title=\"Isle of Wight Festival 1970\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isle_of_Wight_Festival_1970\">Isle of Wight Festival<\/a> in 1970 before <a title=\"Death of Jimi Hendrix\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Death_of_Jimi_Hendrix\">his accidental death<\/a> from <a title=\"Barbiturate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barbiturate\">barbiturate<\/a>-related <a title=\"Asphyxia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asphyxia\">asphyxia<\/a> on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perfectmusictoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/tourbook016-Thumb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1073\" src=\"http:\/\/perfectmusictoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/tourbook016-Thumb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"449\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hendrix was inspired musically by American <a title=\"Rock and roll\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rock_and_roll\">rock and roll<\/a> and <a title=\"Electric blues\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_blues\">electric blues<\/a>. He favored <a title=\"Distortion (music)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Distortion_%28music%29\">overdriven<\/a> amplifiers with high volume and <a title=\"Gain (electronics)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gain_%28electronics%29\">gain<\/a>, and was instrumental in utilizing the previously undesirable sounds caused by <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Guitar feedback\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guitar_feedback\">guitar amplifier feedback<\/a>. He helped to popularize the use of a <a title=\"Wah-wah pedal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wah-wah_pedal\">wah-wah pedal<\/a> in mainstream rock, and was the first artist to use <a title=\"Stereophonic sound\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stereophonic_sound\">stereophonic<\/a> <a title=\"Phaser (effect)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phaser_%28effect%29\">phasing<\/a> effects in music recordings. Holly George-Warren of <i><a title=\"Rolling Stone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rolling_Stone\">Rolling Stone<\/a><\/i> commented: &#8220;Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. In 1967, readers of <i><a title=\"Melody Maker\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Melody_Maker\">Melody Maker<\/a><\/i> voted him the Pop Musician of the Year, and in 1968, <i>Rolling Stone<\/i> declared him the Performer of the Year. <i><a title=\"Disc (magazine)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Disc_%28magazine%29\">Disc and Music Echo<\/a><\/i> honored him with the World Top Musician of 1969 and in 1970, <i>Guitar Player<\/i> named him the Rock Guitarist of the Year. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the <a title=\"UK Music Hall of Fame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UK_Music_Hall_of_Fame\">UK Music Hall of Fame<\/a> in 2005. <i>Rolling Stone<\/i> ranked the band&#8217;s three studio albums, <i><a title=\"Are You Experienced\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Are_You_Experienced\">Are You Experienced<\/a><\/i>, <i><a title=\"Axis: Bold as Love\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Axis:_Bold_as_Love\">Axis: Bold as Love<\/a><\/i>, and <i><a title=\"Electric Ladyland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_Ladyland\">Electric Ladyland<\/a><\/i>, among the <a title=\"Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rolling_Stone%27s_500_Greatest_Albums_of_All_Time\">100 greatest albums of all time<\/a>, and they ranked Hendrix as the greatest guitarist and the sixth greatest artist of all time.
