Georgia (Perfect Music Today) 10\/6\/17\/–In anticipation of the upcoming 25th Anniversary Edition<\/strong> of R.E.M.<\/strong>‘s Automatic for the People<\/em><\/strong>, the band is premiering the never-before-heard demo recording “Devil Rides Backwards<\/strong>.” The song is available today via streaming services as well as for immediate download with all pre-orders of the album.<\/p>\n

The song is available as part of the reissued album’s Deluxe Edition, which features a number of unreleased tracks and demos as well as a live recording of a 1992 performance at\u00a0Athens, GA’s 40 Watt Club.<\/p>\n

In celebration of the 25th<\/sup> Anniversary reissue of the landmark album Automatic For The People<\/em><\/strong>, rock icons R.E.M.<\/strong> are premiering the never-before-heard demo of the oft-mused-about track \u201cDevil Rides Backwards<\/strong>.\u201d The song appears on the reissued album\u2019s deluxe edition, as well as the digital release, and is available today for download with all pre-orders as well as via streaming services; share\/listen <\/strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a> and preorder the album <\/strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe album\u2019s great lost track\u2014talked about by fans the world over down the years, but never previously heard\u2014is \u2018The Devil Rides Backwards On A Horse Called Maybe.\u2019 Although unfinished, its inclusion here is a tantalizing glimpse into what might have been an\u00a0AFTP\u00a0highlight. Except that in this demo, the horse is a mule.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018That was a mistake,\u2019 laughs Stipe. \u2018It\u2019s supposed to be a horse. I think that phrase might have been something that Peter pulled from literature. He thought it had a nice ring to it.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIndeed, Buck always regretted that the singer never completed the lyric. \u2018That was the one that I most wanted to have on the record,\u2019 he says now. \u2018I really loved that song. Michael just didn\u2019t feel that he had it and he likes to work by inspiration. But I remember I was in New Orleans and I played a cassette of a lot of rough mixes to a bunch of people. Five years later they\u2019d go, \u201cGosh, whatever happened to that Devil Rides Backwards song?\u201d It got pretty close but it was never finished. So it\u2019s on this.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Due November 10<\/strong> via Craft Recordings<\/strong>, the remastered album will be available in a variety of formats, the most extensive of which is the Deluxe Edition three CD + Blu-ray, which will feature the album in its entirety mixed in Dolby Atmos.
