New York City(Perfect Music Today) 12/17/2020 In past years Times Square during the holidays, and especially on New Year’s Eve, has teemed with hordes of humanity of one stripe or other. This year, like everything else, it’s different. This year Tammy Faye Starlite performs “Times Square,” the song written by Barry Reynolds for A Child’s Adventure, Marianne Faithfull’s 1983 album. Reynolds had a hand in writing more than half of the album’s tracks, played guitar on the sessions and served as one of its producers.
Across the Atlantic, the album caught the attention of a pre-teen New Yorker. “A Child’s Adventure was the first Marianne Faithfull album I bought, right when it came out,” says Tammy Faye Starlite. She would go on to portray the artist in her in acclaimed theatrical piece, Why’d Ya Do It?: Tammy Faye Starlite Performs Marianne Faithfull’s ‘Broken English which The New York Times called “a hybrid of séance, lecture and concert..” The New Yorker noted that Tammy “brilliantly inhabits the outsized persona of Marianne Faithfull…. (an) alternately stark and darkly funny performance….”
“‘Times Square’ is the first track on A Child’s Adventure and, being from Manhattan as I am, it resonated so deeply with me,” Tammy recalls. “Every time I hear it the reverberation deepens. With the changing times, the changing of Times Square, from the porno films to their eradication, to the period when Jenny Holzer had her epigrams posted on the abandoned marquees, to Disney, Applebee’s, Hello Kitty, BB King’s, and now – whatever we are now.”
“Times Square” is now a video done “very minimally,” according to Tammy. “I sang my part into the phone, Rich Feridun put guitars on it; Scott Anthony mastered it. Michael Schiralli [director of Tammy Faye Starlite Performs Marianne Faithfull’s ‘Broken English] created the video with footage of me and photos by Jeremiah Moss,” she explains.
