“ I came to the Hollywood Bowl in 1965 as a tourist. I never would have believed back then that I’d be playing here 50 years on.”JB

HOLLYWOOD(Perfect Music Today)8/18/16/–The evening kicked off with Yardbirds’ songs including Over Under Sideways Down, and For Your Love both sung by Jimmy Hall. Then legendary keyboardist , (composer of the Miami Vice theme and many movie scores) sat in on songs including Freeway Jam, and Star Cycle. Beck seemed especially moved by having Hammer perform with him. Then Beth Hart sang the Etta James song I’d Rather Go Blind.

The maestro himself was impressed with the night, the audience, and his celebrated friends who came out to share history with him.

Buddy Guy joined Beck on stage and together they performed Let Me Love You. It truly was a lovefest since Beck has often stated that Guy was one of his main influences.  Buddy Guy also was the opening act doing practically a whole set and sounding great.

I’d read that Beck was a fan of Billy Gibbons and ZZ Top and in particular the beautiful melodic song Rough Boy. Well Gibbons joined Beck on stage and explained that Beck asked him if he would perform the song together. They followed it up with a rendition of Company Store. There was an obvious mutual admiration between these two guitar legends and they really enjoyed playing with each other.

Then out of the side door came the one and only Steven Tyler. Carrying his trademark mic stand covered in scarfs. He sang Train Kept A-Rollin’ and also Shapes of Things. Beck next performed a great cover of A Day in the Life, and the show concluded with one encore, a cover of Prince’s Purple Rain with Beth Hart on lead vocals and Steven Tyler, and Jimmy Hall joining on background vocals.

After the show I attended a small backstage get together where I was able to visit with guest of honor as well as some of his band-mates including bassist Rhonda Smith,  keyboardist Jan Hammer, vocalist Jimmy Hall and drummer Jonathan Joseph.
